For some reason I just got into the mood to update the forum, and here we are.
Known Issues
Image attachments not working - this is the first thing I need to get fixed. It worked correctly on local test machine but now they don't.
If you encounter any other issues post them here.
Known Enhancements
- Animated Forum Icon - the campfire is enchanting
- Responsive Styling - much better to look at on mobile phones now
The new forum can be shrunk to a ridiculously small width. It also incorporates "responsive" styling, which moves elements around the page if there is a lack of space. This means no matter if you are looking on a tiny mobile screen or on a full size desktop, you can have a good forum posting experience.
Look at how the 3 most popular UO forums compare side by side on the same 1600x900 monitor:
- HOT/UOGuide - It can even go smaller without a horizontal scroll bar. Notice how you can see 9(!) topics despite it being the smallest width.
- UOForums - You can not see any topics at all without scrolling down. Even when the window takes up the full 1600 width of the monitor!
- Stratics - You can also see no topics despite Stratics being granted the largest amount of width in this example. At a full 1600 pixels you can only see 3 topics, which are all announcements. So you still have to scroll down to view any of the new topics.
These are the kinds of design considerations I pay attention to. Who wants to have to scroll down a ways on every page before you can reach the content?

The browser on the left of the image is the minimum width before a horizontal scroll bar appears. The browser on the right shows what it looks like on a normal size screen.

Fixed the issue related to image attachments not showing (as you can see in this thread).
Fixed issue with users not having permissions to reply to announcement topics.
Updated Youtube Embed to be responsive on smaller widths. Will no longer cause horizontal scrolling.

Browsing the forum on mobile is sooooo good now. If I knew it would be like this I would have updated sooner.

Can't see who started the thread
Only on small widths you can not see who started a topic. There is not enough room for that info.
Can't go to latest post, have to go to last page and then scroll down
Either click on the topic icon (lantern) or the red file icon in front of the topic title or the time of the last post to be taken to your first unread post in the topic.

Also, having your guild name after your forum name was an ingenious idea. I like how it looks so much. It makes you tell like I'm fighting with you all in-game!

There was an issue that cropped up today where people who had avatars selected could not post. That has been fixed now.
Added the footer advertisements back. Google apparently has this new (well several years old now) program where the have ads and links to other pages on your site. It looks pretty nifty so I put that instead.
There is also adblock detection now with reminder images that you should disable it for this site. If anything you get to see links to other topics you might want to look at!
I realize the screenshot I took before hid the Stratics advertisement because I had adblocker on. So, in actuality, Stratics content appears
even further down the page!
I have no plans to place advertisements into the header section (which there has never been on here or UOGuide). They may eventually return in between some of the posts as was the case before.

It anyone wants to make some funny disable adblock images you could. They should be 600x150 pixels in size. Keep the text on the left side of the image so it can be read on smaller resolutions.

For traders and sellers, the no frills approach will definitely impede trades. Many of these people relied on having an identity to sell a product, or offer services, and you have all but stripped that identifying mark away. Your new approach will lead to scams...period.

What are you talking about? Signatures are still allowed on the Atlantic Tradeboard. Most people did not have an avatar.
Eventually there will be a unique avatar system where only you can use the selected image.
So chill out.

It isn't just that, people are reluctant to buy from others without some type of credentials. In this case, forum join dates and post counts go a long way towards helping provide that security. Again, scams are always a concern on open trade forums, and for the most part are better solved proactively than reactive. Just my two cents, and I was unaware the tradeboard still allowed for sigs...
Edit: I don't see any signatures on the tradeboards...outside simple text from Nabin.
Chill out? No reason to, wasn't pissing in any cheerios, don't feel the need to do so either. Just friendly advice, you take it the way you want to dude...you are the master of this domain.

#1) Don't rely on silly things such as join date or post count for security. We just had Gilly Willy almost scam everyone into making a memorial for him.
#2) There are still forum titles that show how many posts someone has right under their names.
#3) You can still see all this information and more by viewing a user's profile.
#4) There is more stuff coming in the future.
