I have noticed a lot of people complaining about lag lately. If you lag then you should always run a trace route and poll to see what the issue is. When lag occurs on a daily basis then either you can contact your ISP or contact EA if it is their issue. Here are the steps:

1) Click Here. Click the UOTrace program link to download the program.
2) Unzip the 2 files anywhere you want.
3) Launch the UOTrace program.
4) A dialog will appear asking if you want to retrieve the shard list. Press No (this function no longer works).
5) The following window will appear.
Image
6) Press the "Trace Route" button near the middle at the top. It will take up to a minute for it to be fully completed. When it has you will see the words "Traceroute Successful" at the bottom left.
7) Press the "Poll" button on the right next to the colored UO-Homepage button. It will now send packets to all servers in your route and determine if any are having issues. You should send around 100 packets to get an accurate reading. Press the "Poll" button again (it now says "Stop Poll") to end polling.

Now you have all the data necessary to determine if you have an issue. If you have anything besides 0% all the way down in the "% loss" column there is probably an issue. Any number above 1% is not normal. I can give you advice on what to do next, either PM me (if you want to keep your IP address private) or post your trace route data here (go to edit and copy, then paste between using the PRE bbCode tags..

and when you find that the backbone routers are giving you lag. What are you going to do? Call them and say that my ping is jumping around on the way to the Ultima Online servers? No one is going to fix a problem specifically for you so you can ping faster to a game. obviously if you have service interuptions or whatever they will of course try and get you back online again. If I had consitantly bad ping caused by a backbone router I would switch providers(ie new cable provider or even DSL) all together.

Calling is exactly what you do. When a server is malfunctioning it affects all traffic, not just Ultima Online packets. Usually they fix the issue within a day or two. But sometimes (as is my case) it does not get fixed for a long time. If you contact the appropriate party then they can get on fixing it.

99,999/100,000 times it is not back bone router latency. latency builds off peering points where one network connects to another one. Also unless you have a connection with a major Telecom your not really hitting and real backbone routers until you hit the peering pop.

I actually got a problem Solved for Jen, of which she had this issue.

Someone pointed me to a working download for UO Trace. The topic was updated with the new link.

I am of the opinion that your ISP's do not really care about latency to a game. They are more worried about quashing net neutrality, so they charge you an exorbitant fee for a low latency line, instead of improving the existing connection.

Hell this is what I deal with on some days:

Now I average these days about 35, but still get those bad packet loss spikes.

Ender, if that same router is giving you issues for more than a week you should call up your ISP and tell them about it. They will get in contact with whoever owns that router and inform them of the issue. Either the router will be fixed or traffic rerouted.

It also appears there may be further issues with an EA router. You should increase the maximum number of hops so it goes all the way to the Atlantic server. You are missing a couple.

When a router shows up black like that, well I am not sure exactly what it means. But you can just ignore it. There appears to be some connection issues where your ping jumps ~60ms. It is doubtful that would be fixed since network operators are mostly concerned with stuff working, not working 50ms faster. The only solution would be to test other ISPs in your area for better connections.

Just because you have a bigger pipe going into your house does not mean your UO connection is going to improve.

Who cares about UO when you have 15Mbps down /2 Mbps up?

Conversation of different internet options came up, and I threw that in there!
